1 De Haro

Mass Timber Comes to San Francisco

Located on the triangular site of a former gravel yard, 1 De Haro is San Francisco’s first cross-laminated timber (CLT) building, California’s inaugural multi-story, fully mass timber construction and the first project in the US to have cross-laminated timber delivered by rail. CLT is engineered from layers of lumber boards (typically 2x6s) set at right angles and laminated together to form panels used in floor, roof, and wall assemblies. These panels offer the structural capacity of concrete while being highly sustainable.

Designed to resemble a jewel box, its wooden core is enveloped by a shimmering glass curtain wall that illuminates at night, seamlessly integrating into its urban surroundings while making a distinctive architectural statement.

CLT and a rooftop photovoltaic system are two of the key features that helped 1 De Haro reach its goal of LEED Gold certification.

Designed by Pfau Long Architecture, the building is situated at the intersection of San Francisco’s SOMA, Potrero Hill, and Showplace Square districts. The project comprises a 4-story, 60-ft tall building which, due to local zoning considerations, features office uses on the upper floors and light industrial uses on the ground floor and mezzanine.

The upper floors are constructed from CLT, allowing the exposed panels to provide a beautiful, warm, natural wood finish. The ground floor is made of concrete, offering 20-foot tall ceilings and a welcoming mezzanine space suitable for production, distribution, and repair uses.
